Academic version
The media has for the last century been the prime communicator of civil society. The central purpose for journalism is to provide citizens with accurate and reliable information they need to function in a free society. Also to educate the public about what information means, how to put it into a qualified context, and what kind of influence it might have on the future.
The journalist is the interpreter of events mediated to the public in the form of news. The purpose for journalism is also to mediate public opinion, raise issues of public concern and participate in setting the public and policy agendas.
Today innovation rules our future as much as regulation, perhaps more. Innovation is the ultimate driver of growth productivity in the information economy and of the development of the information society. Without innovation there is no forward movement which means lagging behind, since standing still is neither possible nor an option in a time bound universe, that is in constant motion.
We take for granted that independent journalism covers politics – it is necessary for democracy. Independent journalism can be a major player in covering innovation, too. It gives people better chances to influence their future. There are already examples of it, such as the discussion around music and copyright protection. By giving it a name – Innovation Journalism – we can talk about it as a practice, discuss the best ways of doing it, and train journalists. Innovation journalism brings business to the news industry, the innovation industry, politics and society in general.
Independent innovation journalism strengthens competitiveness, by focusing public attention in innovation economies on issues of public interest and developing a common language for discussing innovation, similar to the role of political journalism in democracies. Supporting development of independent innovation journalism can be a part of competitiveness/cluster initiatives, just like supporting independent political journalism has been a part of developing democracy.
